ELI5: What is Fencing?

A fence around a building works just like a fence around your backyard — it marks the boundary and makes it harder for people to get in. The taller the fence, the harder it is to climb over.

Definition

Fencing provides perimeter barriers that define and protect the boundaries of a secured area. The effectiveness of fencing as a security control depends heavily on its height and construction. Security+ specifically associates fence height with deterrence levels: a 3-foot fence serves as a deterrent, a 6-foot fence is difficult to climb, and an 8-foot or higher fence with additional obstacles (razor wire, anti-climb attachments) represents serious perimeter security.

Key Details

  • 3 ft fence: Acts as a deterrent—psychologically discourages casual intrusion but easily overcome.
  • 6 ft fence: More difficult to climb—increases effort required and exposure time for intruders.
  • 8 ft+ fence: Serious security barrier; typically combined with razor wire, barbed wire, or anti-climb measures.
  • Often combined with: lighting, CCTV, security guards, and intrusion detection sensors.
  • Perimeter security: Multiple physical barriers in layers (fence → lighting → cameras → guards → access control) exemplify defense-in-depth.
